Do you have a small face?
One of the first of many weird things I noticed being sold here is this mouthpiece. At first, I thought it's supposed to make your face look oval, which in the western world is very desirable. But after 3 years of living here, I've finally found out the terrible truth. It's suppose to make your face look smaller. And as this ray of understanding dawned on me, a whole slew of ads raced through my mind, that shrinking face cream, the haircut to make you small(faced), that nintendo ds lite game that guides you with your facial exercises. Eureka!
Having a kogao or small face is one of the ideal traits of beauty here in Japan. I read that the ideal face size in Korea is 17 cm while here, your head should be 1/8 of your height. Asians are usually big-headed because we say that we have bigger brains which is probably just to make us feel better. It's the classic dilemma: smart or pretty, pick only one! A real no-brainer.
So after computation of my head to height ratio, I learned that I should be 6'4" to be considered a small face. Maybe I should go to Harajuku later, I think I saw 11-inch platforms there before.
O said I should just stand on the silya all the time. Yeah, it's probably cheaper that way. Plus more comfortable.
