February in Tokyo is not a good time to start a diet. There are just too many truffles, chocolates, shortcakes and all manner of sweets blocking the entrance of every godforsaken shop you pass through. It's terrible really. After a while you just learn to forget the 10 lbs you aimed to lose and succumb to the sweet temptation of screaming Gimme daaat!!! to the girl passing out the last free samples of cognac truffle fantasie.

So anyway, I've tasted the lot and have passed my judgement.

10,000 calories in a single chip. Weird but strangely addictive.

Forget Royce chocolates, forget Godiva truffles, forget even those dainty Yokumoku cigarettes which I once ate a whole box of in under 3 minutes. This is it, this is what lembas tastes like in MY Middle Earth:

Marusei Butter Sand (wich)

A product of Hokkaido, I first got a taste of this butter cream and raisin filled cake when Jon's officemate brought some as omiyage. When I saw white boxes being hoarded by people in a special Valentine promotion in Tokyu Hands, I wasn't even sure what it was as all I could read was well, butter. I figured, if all else fails, I could put it on my breakfast roll. But when I opened it ah voila! It pays to be usisero. It soooo tastes like little drops of heaven.

But for the girl on a diet, more like little drops of hell.

Hay thank god Valentines is over.
